U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice says Iran is in open defiance of the international community by resuming sensitive nuclear fuel work.
Rice told the Senate Foreign Relations Committee Wednesday that more options are available now that Iran has been referred to the United Nations Security Council for possible sanctions.
Rice is scheduled to travel to Egypt and Saudi Arabia next week for talks about Iran. She also said the State Department plans to ask Congress for $75 million in additional funding this year to promote democracy in Iran.
Russia is calling on Iran to stop its enrichment activities and return to talks on its nuclear program, which the West says is aimed at producing nuclear weapons. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov says Russian and Iranian officials will discuss the matter in Moscow on Monday.
