1957: The first Atlas Series A test missile was launched. The Atlas rocket engines lost thrust approximately 24 seconds into the flight. The missile performed a "couple of loops" and fell through its own trail of fire before a Range Safety Officer sent a command to destroy it less than a minute after lift-off. Despite the missile's failure, the flight met some of the test objectives for the airframe and the launch system.
